Teams and Clubs

We greatly appreciate the support of teachers who volunteer their time to lead and/or support extracurricular activities at Westwind. As soon as teachers decide which activities they would like to offer, these will be shared with students during morning announcements, then posted on the website.

Soccer:
Tryouts have begun for the girls’ and boys’ soccer teams, with permission forms going home prior to the start of tryouts. The tryout schedule is posted on the Junior bulletin board and daily announcements remind students of those times. The boy’s team will have their tournament in Carp on October 9th while the girl’s team will have their tournament the next day, on October 10th. Thank you to Coach Alward for working with the teams and to all of the parent volunteer drivers — we couldn’t get there without you!

Cross Country:

Students in Grades 3-6 have also met to receive their permission forms as they start training for cross country running, under the leadership of Coaches Tayler and Kelly. The Region 6 meet is on October 23rd at the Kanata Recreation Complex on Walter Baker Drive in Kanata. We wish all of our runners great success in their competition and in pursuing their personal fitness goals.

Drama Club:

The Drama Club, for Junior students, has begun to meet. Their initial focus will be on a project related to our Remembrance Day assembly. Thank you to Mrs. Groskleg and Mr. de Silva for leading

Young Rembrandt's Art Club:
Our first session of the Young Rembrandts drawing program will be taking place Thursdays after school.

Ukelele Kids:
For those Gr 5 & 6 students who registered, your 10 week Ukelele lessons will take place Monday's after school, while the Gr. 3 & 4 students will take place Wednesday's afterschool. Please meet at room 211 for your lessons.

Recorder Club:
Mrs. Power would like to invite students in grades 3-6 to join recorder club. We will meet 1- 2 recesses per week, beginning in November, and practice at home will be expected. Student will need to purchase their own soprano recorder (with Baroque/English fingering). Aulos and Yamaha both make good recorders which cost less than $20 dollars and will sound good with a group. Dollar Store brands are discouraged because they will not tune with or make the same sound as the rest of the group, so it will be harder to know whether you are playing the correct note. Students should listen for announcements in late October to find out more about the Recorder Club.

Catch-up Club:
On Thursday mornings at recess, Mme Neufeld offers an opportunity for students in grades 4-6 to work in the library, catching up on missed homework or getting started on assignments so that they have less homework. Students must request a ticket from their teacher to attend.

Sideline Soccer:
Thank you to Mrs. Penney and Mme Tracey for organizing this league and to all of the teachers volunteering to supervise.
