Scripps Spelling Bee

Thanks to the gracious sponsorship of the Boys and Girls Club, this year marked the return of The Scripps National Spelling Bee to the Ottawa region after a 5 year hiatus. Westwind Junior students eagerly accepted the challenge to spell hundreds of new words. Classes avidly studied countries of origins, parts of speech, pronunciations and definitions, both in class and at home, in hopes of becoming class representatives at our February 16th school spelling bee in the gym. Hats off to those brave students who stood up in front of the entire Junior division and determinedly spelled the words. Students and staff alike were impressed and amazed at the level of skill and dedication. Ultimately 3 spellers were left standing, Jaden Zhang, Justin Burill and Max Pechkoff, who became our inaugural Champion!

All three students were eligible for the next tier, which was held at Algonquin College on March 4, 2017. This event was for all school winners from the Montreal and Ottawa regions, and the winner of this Bee would receive an all-expenses paid trip for 2 to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C in May 2017. High stakes indeed!

After a fierce battle, Westwind’s own Jaden Zhang confidently emerged victorious and he and his parents are off to Washington, DC to represent the Montreal/Ottawa region in May, 2017. Well done Jaden. Your hard work was rewarded.

Congratulations to all students!! This was an exceedingly well received endeavour and we can’t wait to get spelling with Scripps next year.
