EQAO: Primary and Junior Division Provincial Assessments
Posted on 04/06/2018

In Ontario, elementary students write provincial tests in reading, writing and mathematics. The Primary test is administered in the spring of grade 3 and the Junior test is administered in the spring of grade 6. This year’s tests will be administered across the province, from May 22 to June 4, 2018.

An EQAO information pamphlet was sent home with grade 3 and grade 6 students in the fall of 2017. The tests reflect the content and expectations of the Ontario curriculum which students are learning
daily in their regular classes. There are six sections to the test, with each section taking about one hour. There are both multiple-choice and open-response question types. Students typically write the tests in their regular classrooms, and those students who regularly receive accommodations based on an IEP will have all allowable accommodations available to them during the test sessions.

Tests are marked in Toronto over the summer by educators who are not related to our school in any way. The results provide helpful information to the school about our instructional programs and the achievement of our students. Maximum participation is important to the quality of information we receive and, ultimately, to our school’s performance. While a student’s individual performance has no bearing on that individual student’s report card or promotion to the next grade, it does provide one piece of data about the student’s achievement of curriculum expectations. It is important that students perform as well as they can so that we can measure the effect of changes that we make to
our instructional practices each year. We ask that parents of our grade 3 and grade 6 students avoid booking family travel and appointments which would cause them to miss school during this 2-week period, May 22 to June 4, 2018.

There is lots of information available to parents on the EQAO website, including sample tests, FAQs, and videos. Most of our students will already be familiar with the content and format of EQAO questions because sample questions are commonly used by our teachers throughout the year, both during and at the end of units of study, particularly in Mathematics. We ask that parents of our grade 3 and 6 students avoid booking family travel and appointments which would cause them to miss school during this 2-week period, May 22 to June 4, 2018.

In late August, the school begins to receive preliminary results for the province, district and school.

In October, each school receives individual student results, in the form of a letter for each student. One copy of this letter is placed in the student’s OSR (Ontario Student Record) and one copy is sent home to parents.
